The Final Countdown: Breaking Dawn Is Nearly Here

breaking_dawn_cover_by_tranquilitysurreil.png

Less than one week from now, you may hear a very loud and collective sigh of relief. Fans of the Twilight novel series will finally stop holding their breaths waiting for the fourth installment of this popular vampire-romance young adult fiction written by Stephenie Meyer. Breaking Dawn will be released August 2, 2008.

Recap: the previous three books have focused on protagonist Isabella (known as Bella) as she falls in love with a curious and mysterious young boy named Edward, who just happens to be a vampire. Don’t be scared: Edward is a new-wave vampire, he only drinks animal blood, not human. In the first book, Twilight, Bella and Edward start to develop their relationship amidst growing tension from other vampire clans.

The second novel in the series, New Moon, introduces the new and loveable character of Jacob Black, who was born a werewolf. Bella befriends Jacob and they become instant BFFs. More romantic drama with Edward, and more of the good stuff. I don’t want to give too much away.

eclipse.jpgNumber three – Eclipse. Bella finds out that you can’t date a vampire and be BFFs with a werewolf – apart from popular belief. Not only are these books fun to read, they’re full of useful tips. I know now to never invite my vampire friends and werewolf friends to the same party! Stephenie Meyer was really looking out for me there! Anyway, Bella has to choose between her vampire lover and werewolf friend - I’m not going to tell you who she chose – but let’s just say the other person is reeeally upset.

AND NOW! The New Upcoming Release: Breaking Dawn

What to expect? It’s hard to say. One thing is for sure: the book will be a lot of fun to read. Meyer has been pretty tight-lipped about the latest installment, but we do know that the first chapter is entitled “Engagement” AKA somebody’s getting married!!

The coolest part of this series is that Stephenie Meyer’s includes playlists to go along with while you’re reading the series. Isn’t that dreamy!? Some of the artists in the playlists include: Muse, My Chemical Romance, Coldplay, Armor for Sleep and Travis, to name just a few.

This Party Is Not Traumatic, Try: Fantastic!

A few months ago I went to a Cut/Copy show – it was one of the most incredible live concerts I’ve been to in a very long time. You see, I love, love, love Cut/Copy.

I’ve loved them from the beginning with Bright Like Neon Love to this year’s album In Ghost Colours. Anyway, my point is that I was a terribly biased audience member. I had little time for whomever was opening that night. In my mind, living up to the great dance-catchiness of Cut/Copy seemed an insurmountable task. Well, that evening Black Kids opened and I was pleasantly surprised that they were equally as dancibly catchable.

Just who are these Black Kids I pondered. Where did they come from? Where do they go? And you know the rest of the song. But seriously, if you love dance-synthy-retro-euro-disco-80s-catchy tunes, pick up Partie Traumatic their new album. This Jacksonville, Florida Quintet of keyboardists, guitars, drums and vocals are storming onto the Indie music scene. They were named an “ Artist to Watch for in 2008” by Rolling Stone. In fact, last Thursday night Black Kids serenaded David Letterman’s show with “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You” If you didn’t catch them on the Letterman show, just look at your local show listings and you’ll see that they’re probably coming to a town near you – they have a crazy touring schedule.

Let me just say this: if you’re making a summer mix of beach jams and BBQ tunes, DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE Black Kids. Seriously. If you put the songs “Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo)” or “Hit the Heartbreaks” people are gonna line up to talk to you. “Who’s this?” they’ll say. “Oh, I saw them months ago. Well, I didn’t, but someone I know did,” you’ll say. Their response: “Oh really? Why are you so amazing? Marry me?”*

Stop, Hey, What’s that Sound? …It’s the NEW CSN&Y Album!

csny.jpgI remember when I was in college and listening to Crosby, Stills and Nash (and sometimes Y … as in Neil Young) was a rite of passage. We would listen to their records over and over and over, singing along and basking in our naïve youthfulness. Who could forget those glorious years at the beginning of the new millennium?

What I mean to say is, Crosby, Stills and Nash are timeless. They appeal to every generation, be it baby boomers who were around for the Vietnam protests, or today’s young adults who are discovering the group for the first time.

In this age of one-hit-wonders, CSNY proves their longevity with the latest album Déjà Vu Live – an eclectic musical mix of 16 of their popular tracks played live. While the selection may be eclectic, the anti- war theme that runs through each song is apparent. Déjà Vu is riffing on their song “Déjà Vu” from album 1974’s So Far, but more aptly, it is suggestive of a return to the CSN(Y) catalogue as a means of returning to the politics that surrounded this strongly anti-war group.

In this era of the Iraq War, CSN are back to remind us of the perils and destruction caused by war. Tracks such as “Living With War,” “Military Madness,” “Let’s Impeach the President” and “Find the Cost of Freedom” have blatant messages of learning from our past mistake

This anthemic live album couldn’t come out at a more opportune time, with the US Presidential election just around the corner and the possibility for change on the horizon.

Check out this new album by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and remember just how much you love CSNY!

Batman Returns … to theaters near you!

joker.jpg

By now you’ve heard about it, read about, probaby even gone to the Cineplex to watch it — the much anticipated Batman flick — The Dark Knight — is finally here!

The incredibly talented, late Heath Ledger is slated to win an Oscar® for his portrayal of the villainous Joker, while Christian Bale suits up as Batman once again after his incredible job of filling the heroic wings in 2005’s Batman Begins.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is the new, but old love interest, Rachel Dawes. Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes who first played Rachel, but was replaced for undisclosed reasons (Holmes’ PR assistant was unable to be reached, as she works on Mars). Director Christopher Nolan delivers the darkest Batman film to-date, and it’s already receiving major praise from the critics.

There are a number of interesting connections between actors in this film. For example, Maggie is Jake Gyllenhaal’s older sister, and of course Jake and Heath are known best for their roles in Brokeback Mountain. Meanwhile, Katie Holmes starred in Dawson’s Creek with Michelle Williams, who has a child with Heath Ledger. Young Hollywood is a tangled web of romantic connections, kind of like a real-life Rules of Attraction (which, for the record, stars Dawson’s James Van Deer Beek in the lead role).

That’s all for now!

Tune in next time — same bat time, same bat channel!
